Surface design, repeat pattern design is my favorite thing to do!
I sketch, color with watercolor paintings, or use iPad Pro for the coloring, and then scan, and use Adobe Illustrator to make patterns.
I sometimes use Adobe Photoshop, but I prefer Illustrator for pattern making.
